Reece Oxford
One of the downsides of us now having a really strong bench means the chances for game time for Reece Oxford are more limited.

So, do we send the lad out on loan, if we can that is, or do we keep him in the U21 squad ?

Re: Reece Oxford
He should be playing youth football competitively however training with the first team is something he has earned as well as being available for the Cups. As the season kicks on the manager can absolutely determine whether or not he would improve the side if played in league matches. I think he should feature in the league Cup no matter what.

Billic did him a very very very big favor playing him the next week after he sensational game and letting him come back down to earth and realize hes still a kid with a lot to work on. It would be a disservice to everyone if he hadn't played since then or been protected and only brought on as a sub at the end.

I find that a defeatist view. I think clubs could do better by their youths. I think there's absolutely no harm in trying, and actually the benefits of success would be enormous.

If a centre back gets injured and the centre back on the bench doesn't come on then I'd suggest you could easily have picked Cullen or Oxford in his place.

Re: Reece Oxford
You could have a bench as long as the pitch it still wouldn't change the fact that very few youth players will ever reach the standard it takes to play first team premier league football, Oxford is a special case him being exceptionally talented for a sixteen year old.

Everyone is happy to see youth given a go, but for most of us this is secondary to the performance of the team.

Most of these kids have Dads to worry about them personally.

I THINK THEY SHOULD MAKE THE GOALS BIGGER SO ITS EASIER FOR 16 YEAR OLDS TO SCORE.

You're right Ginge... it would be another blow for the small teams and allow the big boys scope to build much, much bigger benches ;)

You could change it from those Ricaro seats to a futon

Re: Reece Oxford
This idea of allowing any number of youngsters on the bench is daft. What about all of the money that clubs have invested in benches specifically sized for 7 players (or 4 Ruddocks)? It would be like changing the size of the goal posts.

Re: Reece Oxford
Good to think out of the box Alex but I just don't see where that would help. They might get on the bench but they wouldn't be picked to play.

If it's the kind of manager that would play them, then he is the type of manager to pick them on a bench of 7.

I'd much rather it be a bench of 7 but two of those 7 have to be U21... and British (if that were legal)

If someone like Man City or Chelsea came in for him now, is there anythign stopping them from getting him on the cheap?

Re: Reece Oxford
What about 7 subs allowed as currently, plus any number of extra U-21 players on the bench. Would actively promote young players.

ludo21 2:08 Tue Sep 15
Re: Reece Oxford
Or... just allow 3 under 21s in addition to the current seven subs.

Eggy - yes I did realise that as I was typing it... new rules (if brought in?) could allow for a couple of youngsters as well??

No, it was this season, only a couple of weeks ago... might have been Hughes or Ranieri?

Re: Reece Oxford
Yes, I saw that interview... said that he had started training full time with the first team this season but was happy to play for whatever age group needed him.

Seemed perfectly happy with the situation and hopefully we can involve him in a good long LC run.

Re: Reece Oxford
At 16 he is still physically growing so I dont think shunting him out on Loan to League 1 or 2 club would be ideal.

I read an interview with Reece Oxford where he said he was quite happy to play in the Under 18's let alone the Under 21's.

Re: Reece Oxford
I think one manager (can't remember who) called for a change to allow all unused 25 squad members to be on the bench... would be a good idea and allow youngsters to feel more involved and keep the squad happy.... if you are cruising a game 3-0 it gives scope for giving youngsters a run out who might not be on the bench otherwise.
